Here it may be important to inform reader's of this annotation why Poseidon is so angry with Odysseus. Polyphemus, the Cyclops, is Poseidon's son. Odysseus blinded him while escaping his island. For some reason, perhaps hubris (pride), Odysseus shouted to the Cyclops that his name was the name of the man who blinded the Cyclops. Poseidon, angry with the man who blinded his son, found Odysseus and decided to intervene in his return home so he would pay for blinding the Cyclops. This back story is included earlier in The Odyssey, however it takes places before this annotation pa**age and is useful for understanding why Poseidon decides to cast Odysseus off his track home.
