When performing multiplication, you may come across some problems in various forms. These problems may seem like they're trying to trick you, but just remember that multiplication is addition in compressed form and that they have extremely similar properties. Commutative Property The Commutative Property of multiplication says that if you move a number around in an equation, it still creates the same product. Associative Property The Associative Property of multiplication says that if you change the groupings of the numbers (usually with parenthesis), it will still create the same product. Identity Property The Identity Property of multiplication says that any number multiplied by one (1) is itself. Go ahead, try it! Zero-Product Property Zero-Product Properly of multiplication says that any number equation in which a number is multiplied with 0 has a product of 0. Note: both factors can also be 0. Distributive Property The Distributive Property of Multiplication says that multiplying a sum by a number is equal to multiplying each addend (of the sum) by the number and then adding the products at the end.
