Howard Thurman is noted as one of the foremost leading black theological scholars of his time. In 1949 Thurman wrote Jesus and the Disinherited. On of the questions that Thurman asked in his book is " What do religions say to those whose back is up against a wall?" Religion grants us the opportunity to see and experience God's work in our lives. As we struggle each day living with the things that make us different such as race, poverty, cla** structuralism and spiritual disengagement, God still manages to work in our lives . Thurman suggests that through reading the Gospel it allows human beings to uncover a manual resistance for the poor and disenfranchised. The Gospel sends the message that like Jesus we may be forced to live outside society, but God still loves us and teaches us to focus on self-love and other traits and attributes that defeat fear and the hatred that decays our souls and the world around us. This book helped change and shape the civil rights movement and forever our nation's history.
