Activity One: I really enjoy the beginning of “Midnight, Licorice, Shadow,” because it places readers directly into the setting. Including basic background information seems to be quite common in short stories, but it is not something I particularly excel at. I'm never quite sure of what is relevant or irrelevant, what is boring or interesting, or what will hook my audience. Even with the contrasting of name choices, we are already able to see the main characters' differing personality traits--something that intrigued me! “You've got to be kidding me.” As she first opened her eyes on a Monday morning, she was confused as to why she was not greeted by rays of sunlight. The room was dim, only a pale grey light was distinguished behind her curtains. He was sitting upright in the bed next to her, a scowl upon his face as he scrolled through the weather app on his phone. “Rain is going to completely ruin this day for us,” he growled. She absentmindedly reached towards him, tracing circles on his back in attempt to relax him. “We just have to make the best of what's going to be thrown our way today,” she reminded him, as she had so many other times. “Who wants to go on a hike for the entire day, in the rain?” he responded with disdain. “Think on the bright side! Yeah, we have to wear ponchos, but at least you won't get sunburned.” She watched as he sat mulling this over. When she could tell that the sour look was getting replaced by one of content, she leaned over and pulled him down next to her. He embraced her while pressing their noses together, making it look like he had only one eye. “I guess it won't be so bad,” he said slowly, but offering her a smile. And as she smiled back, she mentally added this morning to the list of occasions where she was able to turn his mood around. Another day, another triumph. Activity Two: 1. Why does it seem so dark in here? 2. As her eyes slowly opened, she took in the gloomy light filtering in through the window while hearing him complain. 3. He's going to need some convincing today, she thought wearily while observing her surroundings. 4. “Well, this day is already shot to hell.” 5. Maybe he'll strike a chord of positivity today, she hoped despite the odds Mother Nature had going against her. 6. While stirring she rolled over and reached for him, confused to find him already sitting up on the other side of the bed. 7. She awoke with a feeling of anticipation for the day that lay ahead of her, only to have it shaken by the negativity already pouring from his lips. 8. “Good morning,” she said sleepily, only to be met by words of contempt. 9. She could tell as soon as she saw the outline of his body sitting cross-legged on the bed that her morning may not go as easily as she had hoped. 10. Although the light filtering in from behind the curtains entailed a day of gloom, she could not help but feel an air of excitement as she anticipated the day's events.
