Formed by guitarist/screamer Helmuth in 1990, Austria's Belphegor quickly made inroads in their homeland, but had to wait nearly a decade before their efforts crossed borders and were released internationally. Also featuring guitarist Sigurd, ba**ist Marius, and a revolving-door drum stool policy, the band's overtly satanic, Scandinavian-style black metal isn't exactly groundbreaking, but very competently executed nonetheless. Following a set of demos circulated in the obligatory CD-trading extreme metal underground, the group unleashed their 1995 debut The Last Supper through Lethal Records. It was later re-issued by World War III Records with six bonus tracks (some from their rare 1994 Obscure and Deep EP) and was followed by 1997's Blutsabbath and 2000's Necrodaemon Terrorsathan. ~ Ed Rivadavia, All Music Guide
