[Audio sample 1: Rabbi Lawrence Kelemen]:
When there's someone in your life who fills your head
There's nobody else, there's only them and all you want to do is take care of them and give to them and love them
When it keeps occurring to you like, what can I buy her… does she like flowers?
No, oh I know how I can surprise her — this will be a great surprise for her!
You know she didn't say anything about this but I know this will make her happy
When this is the way that you live your life then you understand what it's like to be alive
[Verse: Moshe Friedman]
She said the greatest act of love she ever witnessed
Was when I held her hair while she vomited from morning sickness
We're well beyond the puppy love and the fairy dust
Our commitment's carried us ever since the rabbi married us
No turning back like we sank the only lifeboat
Only way forward is together on this tightrope
So we'll have to trust each other till the day we die
I'll teach you how to laugh if you teach me it's okay to cry
Love has to be a verb or it will be stale
It's not enough to buy a female some retail
Not enough to send a birthday card through email
Cuz nothing says I love you like the details like
Knowing which songs she would want on her greatest hits
And that she loves salt and vinegar potato chips
And that communication is key to relationships
So if I keep telling you I love you don't get tired of me saying this
And not love like a fat kid loves cake
Cuz once he's eaten half the plate then he wants to have a break
I love you like a sage loves to learn
Who's crazed love burns brighter with every page that he turns
I remember when we knew it's getting serious
And you asked me if our love was true or just delirious
I told you I don't know the things life has in store
But this is the feeling that all the birds sing for
And whatever comes you're worth doing hard things for
Beyond that I can't say anything more
Cuz love isn't always chocolate cake and peppermints
But I would spend my life just learning how to get your hints
And from then on our love has grown ever since
So I write to you with eloquence that this isn't half my sentiments
And I know this room has elephants and we have room for development
But even if I were from Mars and you were from Venus
Not even the entire planet Earth could come between us
…and I mean this
This is a poem about true love
[Audio sample 2: Rabbi Lawrence Kelemen]
The more that you give to somebody
The more that you sacrifice for them
The more emotionally involved that you become with them
And if you give them something that's especially precious like…
You share yourself with somebody
That will turn your emotions upside down
If you open yourself up and you share what's happening inside of you
That creates extraordinary emotional closeness
That is an emotional rocket
It moves you through lovespace at light speed
