Palene: My dreams did not lie. Our spies brought word that new legions were gathering. The Romans were still the hunters, we the hunted. And now we began to quarrel amongst ourselves: Asians against Mauritanians, Baeticans against Parthtans, but especially the Cauls and Cemians against our own Thracians. Crixus confronted Spartacus Crixus: Attack... that's what we've got to do, Once I had some faith in you, But now you're holding back, When you know we should attack. Revenge.,.that's what l'm looking for, A chance to even up the score, Is it courage that you lack, Dont you see we must attack Rome now! Spartacus: Escape... that's what we've got to do, Once I had belief in you, But that was at the start, Now it seems we've grown apart. Revenge... what good is that to us, If we fought to be free to just, Make others into slaves, We deserve our early graves, We must escape! Crixus: We must attack! Spartacus: You must be mad! Crixus: You must be blind, We must attack! Spartacus: We must escape! Crixus: You've lost your nerve! Spartacus: You've lost your mind! Palene: Faces suddenly red, hands on swords, Spartacus and Crixus were about to fight. Spartacus turned away. He and Crixus were already a world apart. Crixus: Oh Spartacus, if only our dreams could be the same. "THE PARTING OF THE WAYS" Crixus: It's strange to find we're almost strangers, As I turn to leave you now, I know there are dangers, You have believed in me, As l believed in you, But it's not hard to see, In the end a man should do,
What his heart tells him he must, And so I place my thrust in the parting of the ways. The days that I have stood beside you, They are days that I could not forget if I tried to, But day has turned to night, Life's changed for you and me, Who knows what's wrong or right, We'll agree to disagree, Now the time for talk has pa**ed, And so we reach at last the parting of the ways, Now I need to find my own direction. Side by side we faced the world together; But nothing lasts forever, And so the story ends, More than pride's dividing you and I now, And though we say goodbye now, At least we part as friends. It seems our future is decided, Now the fates dictate that you and I be divided, And though it's hard to tell, Where we will go from here, You know I wish you well, Even though my course is clear, It's no easy thing I do, To walk away from you at the parting of the ways, Though I need to find my own direction, You can bet I'll never forget, The times we've come through, But now we come to, The parting of the ways. Palene: We watched Crixus, with thirty thousand Cauls and Germans trudge away southwards until a small cloud of dust in the distance was all that was left, I looked at Spartacus. His hawk-eyes were moist but never blinked. When he spoke, it was to thank the Gods for the seventy thousand that stayed. Who could fail to love such a man? Crixus: Now I need to find my own direction, You can bet I'll never forget, The times we've come through, But now we come to, The parting of the ways.
