Social media has corrupted us, We're all obsessed with self promotion, We can't put our phones down, We're the void of all emotion. Our idea of reality is warped, And we're all glued to our screens, Our generation is wasting away, And there's no hope for our teens . We're guilty of being contrived, Because we're all doing the Harlem Shake, We're unaware of the world around us, We're narcissistic and we're fake. These are the things they say about us, Because we live our lives on-line, But if they looked a little closer, They might be surprised by what they find. we're a world that's stood together, To say "Je suis Charlie", I stand with Ahmed, "Black lives matter", " He for She", We're a world that says yes, A world where "Love wins", A world where a tweet is where a movement begins, A world where those living under oppressive regimes, Can show there true colours and fight the machine, A world where the weird kid can feel far less strange, A world where our words really can make a change. Millions tuned in to hear that "It gets better",
To hear there not alone, to hear there no lesser, For every outrage and atrocity we uploaded and we tweeted, We stood beside those who need it, The broken, bullied, defeated. We may have spent hours arguing about the dress, But we also use our platforms to stand by the distressed. So just imagine for a moment, If it all ceased to exist, How many friendships would you lose, How many opportunities would you miss. Millions around the world would lose there support, Communities would unravel, Humanity would transform. And all those people living in small oppressive towns, Would have no-one left to talk to, Except for those who drag them down. Careers would be over, and friendships would wither away, Thoughts would stop being shared, And ideas would start to decay. Social media brings us all together, As one giant dysfunctional family, Who perhaps spend too long on their phones, But live together happily. So before you speak out about how social is the devil, Just remember all the good it's brought, And how it's changed the world for the better. So call me naive but I'm feeling quite hopeful, The future looks bright, for the media that's social.
