Cause I kept my job
Two weeks before Christmas.
Cause lately Santa Kerouac
Seems cowardly and reckless.
Cause lately I hear monologues
On balconies and porches.
Cause all the easy fantasies
are childish colour funerals.
Cause living is responsible
With plans and thought and savings.
Cause unfortunately the world
Will just go on and on.
Cause we count our dollars on the train
To the airport.
Cause we constantly evade the fact
There’s no such thing as travel.
Cause lights will always flicker
and things will always break.
Cause your father in the pilot gear
Is talking to your future son.
Cause all my friends my age and I
Aren’t scared of dying anymore
Cause we’re all scared more than ever now
Scared of living.
Cause the speaker in the parking lot
Still speaks and plays on Boxing Day.
Cause the seasons and the storefronts change
But all this is just dressing.
Cause there’s stadiums of people
now
There’s stadiums of lonely.
Cause the homeless man with the gym bag
Is no reason to quit.
So make your choice
by the end of the week
Heart attack or cold feet.
Cause I’m not afraid
I’m not afraid anymore.
