Eka Darville - AKA Smile lyrics

OPENING SEQUENCE Hospital doors slam open. A stretcher carrying Luke Cage enters a corridor as Jessica's voiceover is heard. JESSICA: Pain is always a surprise. Help! Somebody, please. Please help! JESSICA: I try to avoid landmines. What happened? JESSICA: [stutters] He hit his head. JESSICA: Avoid caring. I can even see it coming. But until it hits, you have no idea what pain is. DOCTOR: What do we got? NURSE: A head injury with LOC. Possible blunt force trauma. Unresponsive. DOCTOR:: No bruising, lacerations. JESSICA: I'm telling you, he got knocked out. Gunpowder? Did you see him get shot? JESSICA: I saw him unconscious. Are you gonna do something? Let's get a CT scan. You can wait in the reception area. JESSICA: No. NURSE: Hey, you did a good thing. If he survives, it's because of you. [sighs] Cut to: Emergency room [One of the nurses there is Claire Temple.] DOCTOR: Cerebral edema with ma** effect. Prep for an intracerebral pressure catheter, 100 grams of mannitol to bring the swelling down. Attempts to inject Luke go nowhere because his unbreakable skin cannot be penetrated by the needles. Oh, sh**. DOCTOR:Something's weird with the needle. Sorry. NURSE: Come on! DOCTOR: What the hell are you doing? It's not me. You're done. No. It's him! Or these needles! DOCTOR: I need a damn nurse who knows what they're doing. JESSICA: You're wasting time! CLAIRE: I got this.[monitor beeps rapidly] Blood pressure's climbing. DOCTOR: He can't wait. [grabs a head drill] JESSICA: No, do something non-invasive. DOCTOR: Remove her, please. CLAIRE:180 over 110. Ma'am, I'm gonna have you... Get off me. [the drill goes up until it smokes [doctor sighs] DOCTOR: Okay. He's, uh... one of those. I need the Head of Surgery, and find the Chief of Staff. I need a consult. CLAIRE: Uh, I'm sorry, sir. I can't let you in there. JESSICA: Please help him. CLAIRE: I'm not a doctor. I don't think any doctor can fix this. JESSICA: Then I need to get him out of here. [inaudible] CLAIRE:You know, if those cops are here for him, I need to report this. JESSICA: The cops have it wrong. He is a good man. He just got used by an evil prick. CLAIRE:This evil prick the one who put a shotgun to his head? JESSICA: No, that was me, and I didn't have a choice. CLAIRE:Okay, I'm done. JESSICA: I did have a choice... and I chose to survive. CLAIRE: Ow. You know, moving him might k** him. JESSICA: [sighs] Leaving him here will expose him. [Jessica breathing heavily] JESSICA: Look, I know that we scare you, and you've never seen anything like us, but this is a good man. CLAIRE:And you? JESSICA:I'm an a**hole. But help me or get out of my way. CLAIRE:You don't scare me, and you're not my first. CLAIRE: The fifth floor bridge goes to a parking structure across the street. [elevator dings] I have a car. [they enter the elevator] CLAIRE:Where are you taking him? JESSICA: [sighs] Out of here. That's as far as I got. CLAIRE:Well, you're not taking him to my place. Been there, done that, lost my lease. JESSICA:My apartment's close. It's a disaster, but he already knows that. [Claire sighs] JESSICA:Is he gonna die? CLAIRE:I don't know. You can ice him, use oral meds to reduce his swelling. But it's... it's a crapshoot. Might as well stop that right now. It won't do him any good. JESSICA:Stop what? CLAIRE:Guilt makes people do stupid sh**. JESSICA:I'm not guilty. It's not my fault. CLAIRE:See, I hate that. I want everything to be my fault. Good or bad. Means I have some control. JESSICA:You don't. CLAIRE:Obviously. But it keeps me dreaming I can change things for people. [points to Luke ]Case in point. JESSICA:You're in total control. You're responsible for all of this and I blame you. [elevator dings] CLAIRE:Don't push it. [sighs] As they walk out, Claire greets a pa**ing doctor with a "hey". [woman speaking indistinctly on PA] [phone ringing] CLAIRE:Just in case. RECEPTIONIST: Jessica Jones? JESSICA: Why? RECEPTIONIST:Are you Jessica Jones? CLAIRE: Ellie, we've met. I'm Claire, down in Emergency. ELLIE: This call is for you. You have to take it. JESSICA: Will you take him to this address? Jessica gives Claire an Alias Investigations business card, Claire drives the wheelchair away. [Jessica gets the phone.] JESSICA:What? KILGRAVE: Oh, come on, be a little surprised it's me. JESSICA:You found me at the only hospital in the neighborhood. Big surprise. You've expanded your reach. But not to me. KILGRAVE: Should have known you'd save your own skin, boyfriend be damned. Selfish as ever. Clearly, it's not better to have loved and lost. I'm sure you regret having ever met Luke. Jessica covers the mouthpiece to talk in private to Ellie. JESSICA:Where's your security center? ELLIE: Uh, east wing, second floor. JESSICA: I certainly regret meeting you. KILGRAVE: Oh, good, then we finally have something in common. JESSICA:Regret. And hatred. Let's not forget about that one. Fortunately, for you, we're already at a hospital, so when I rip your tongue from your skull, it'll be a short trip. [Kilgrave is on the security room] You really are a little an*l crumpet, aren't you? JESSICA:Name calling, that's not really your style. Oh, no, are you upset with me for not dying? Did I foil your evil plan? "Evil"? Come on, how reductive. JESSICA:I suppose "me, evil" means "you, good." Bullsh**. I mean, it's true that I've never given a second thought to anyone that I've let die, but I take no pleasure in it... like a truly evil man would. I'm merely... removing nuisances. Public service, really. But you... I believe for the first time, I will rather enjoy watching you die. JESSICA:The feeling's mutual. [The room is empty] OFFICER: Jessica Jones! [gun shots hit the door.] Cut to HOSPITAL ROOM woman on TV: ...simply removes the fish from the skin and at that point... The public announcers starts blaring Kilgrave's voice KILGRAVE: Paging all personnel, visitors, the whining, the wounded and dying. JESSICA: Oh, hell, no. KILGRAVE: A dangerous virus has been spread throughout this building. For emergency instructions, turn to your closest video screen. [Pictures of Jessica appear on the room's television] This is Jessica Jones. JESSICA: He can't control everyone in the hospital. KILGRAVE: She is patient zero. Her poison will destroy you all, unless you find and k** her first. Now. JESSICA: [gasps] Unless he can. Stay, you'll break a hip. DOCTOR: Hey! [cut to outside. The doctor's grunts are heard and Jessica walks out dressed as an EMT, mask included.] man 1: Search the other ones! She's not in here. woman 1: All clear. man 2: Check the other one. woman 2: We haven't found her yet! woman 3: She's gotta be here somewhere. man 3: Go down the east hallway. JESSICA: Can't wait to k** this Jessica Jones, huh? PATIENT: Have to find her first. man 4: No, this is clear. woman 3: Let's take this hallway. Jessica shoves the patient out of the way. She returns and pulls out the surgical mask. PATIENT: Jessica Jones! Jessica shoves the patient away and rushes towards the door man 4: It's Jessica! Jessica is hit before walking out the hospital JESSICA: God damn it! Cut to: JESSICA'S PLACE [Luke's in the bed, Claire kicks garbage from the floor as she approaches with ice bags] CLAIRE: Your girlfriend's a slob. [sighs] Man, you got powers. Now is the time to use 'em. [sighs] [Luke starts convulsing] CLAIRE:Oh, sh**!No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. The door opening is heard, Jessica has arrived. CLAIRE: Okay. JESSICA: What the hell are you doing? CLAIRE:Hold his head still! Jessica does so, Claire gets a syringe CLAIRE:I gotta drain the cerebral-spinal fluid. JESSICA: He has unbreakable skin. CLAIRE:I'm not going through his skin. JESSICA:Are you serious? Claire afixes a huge needle to a syringe. JESSICA:Jesus! CLAIRE:I have to slide the needle along the optic nerve, so I need you to hold him very still. Can you do that? JESSICA:Can you do that? CLAIRE:[sighs] I have no idea. JESSICA:Okay. [looks away] Ugh! CLAIRE:Okay. I'm going in. Ugh! I have to get into the cranium. JESSICA: Ah, Jesus. CLAIRE:You puke, he's done! JESSICA:I'm good. CLAIRE:I'm in. Jessica groans, as Claire manages to drain a large quantity of yellow liquid into the syringe. JESSICA: Is he gonna be all right? CLAIRE:[exhales] Won't know till he wakes up. Claire takes the syringe out of Luke's head. She and Jessica breathe heavily. JESSICA:I need a drink. You want a drink? I'm having a drink. CLAIRE:It's 5:00 in the morning. JESSICA:Exactly. [sighs] Do you know where Luke's phone is? CLARE: Yeah. It was the only thing on him. He hasn't gotten any calls. Just keep him iced. At this point, it's just a waiting game. I have to get back to the hospital. Did you get cut? I suppose I gotta look at that. JESSICA: I have to go. Just need to find out where. CLAIRE:You have to go? With a large unconscious man in your bed? JESSICA: He won't be the last... person hurt by Kilgrave. CLAIRE:The so-called "evil prick"? JESSICA: [sighs] Stupid phone is dead. CLAIRE:All right, well... if your leg gets infected, you're not going anywhere. Take off your pants. [bag unzipping] JESSICA:I usually like a little more romancing. CLAIRE:Don't we all? [drops phone] CLAIRE:So, did Kilgrave do that to you? JESSICA:No, he doesn't do his own dirty work. He controls minds. CLAIRE:You're joking. JESSICA:It's fine by me if unbreakable skin is where you wanna draw the line. CLAIRE:Guess it's just harder to believe someone would call himself... "Kilgrave." I mean, why not just "Snuffcarca**"? JESSICA:[chuckles] [winces] CLAIRE:Clean and deep. But I think we can get away without stitches. So, how do you stop a mind-controller? JESSICA:I have to find him first. Kilgrave had control of Luke. He had him calling in with updates on me. So, if I can trace the number that Luke was calling, it might get me closer to where Kilgrave is holed up. CLAIRE:And what makes you the one who has to face him? JESSICA:Crap-a** luck. CLAIRE: I had... have a friend like you and Luke. JESSICA:Bleeding and unconscious? CLAIRE:Yeah, actually, more often than not. He makes life hard for bad guys. JESSICA:How's he so sure he's the good guy? CLAIRE:He isn't. He questions every move he makes... every thought he has. Just like I'm guessing you do. I could reach out to him. He might help. JESSICA:I can't risk another person getting controlled. It's the only thing I don't question. I have to k** him on my own. Cut to: KILGRAVE'S HIDEOUT KILGRAVE: [breathing heavily] I couldn't stop her. And it's your bloody fault, Dad! ALBERT: You're more powerful than ever. KILGRAVE:What would happen if you gave me the lot? All of it? A whole dram? I don't know. KILGRAVE:Well, make an educated guess. ALBERT: 40% chance it makes you stronger. 60% it k**s you. KILGRAVE:I know which one I want. What about you, Dad? Which do you want? ALBERT: I want it to k** you. KILGRAVE: Hmm. His own son, imagine. Well... for what it's worth, [slaps his cheek] I feel the same way. [inhales deeply] KILGRAVE: Give me everything you've got. Maybe I'll get strong enough to control her again. He walks to the balcony. KILGRAVE: God. Dear God, I would do anything to see the look on her face when she realizes she's helpless. I'd make her want me. Then reject her. Devastate her over and over and over until she wants to die. [breath trembling] No, I won't give her that, either. She'd wither away like someone dying of thirst or starvation. Be a certain ring of hell, designed specially for her. [inhales deeply] Or maybe I'll just k** her. Kilgrave walks back into the apartment. KILGRAVE.Shall we, Albert? Let the experiment begin. [sighs] Cut to JESSICA'S APARTMENT Jessica lies next to the still unconscious Luke in bed, and embraces him. JESSICA: I thought about you. I mean, I knew it would never happen. [sighs] But I couldn't help... picturing us. Like, on an actual date. Bowling. Normal sh**. [Chuckles] You're the first person I ever pictured a future with. You're also the first person I ever shot in the head. If you... When you wake up...I'm not gonna be around to screw up your life anymore. Probably because I'll be dead. But maybe Kilgrave will be dead, too. CLAIRE: You got power! JESSICA:Your phone. Might get me to Kilgrave. [scoffs] You're freaking unconscious and you're helping me. [kisses Luke] I would have liked that future. She gets up and goes to meet Claire in the office. Cut to KILGRAVE'S HIDEOUT Kilgrave exhales ALBERT: This could sting. KILGRAVE: It doesn't sting, Dad, it burns like a poxy branding iron. The lackeys stare at each other and Albert looks concerned as he injects the serum below Kilgrave's ear, making him groan. After he takes out the needle, Kilgrave grunts vigorously and finally screams. Cut to JESSICA'S APARTMENT Jessica is looking into Luke's phone. CLAIRE: Find something? JESSICA:Justin Boden. CLAIRE: Who's he? JESSICA:Hedge fund broker. Fancy address. Kilgrave used his phone to call Luke. CLAIRE: He can just take someone's phone like that? JESSICA:They're lucky if that's all he takes. [Claire sighs] Claire, I need a favor. CLAIRE: Another favor. [sighs] I have to get to work. JESSICA:I know. You help people. That's who you are. And you make the rest of us look like selfish pricks. CLAIRE: Is that a compliment or... JESSICA:There are other nurses at the hospital who can help. There's only one that can help Luke. [Claire sighs] JESSICA:I just don't want him to wake up alone, not knowing what's happening. CLAIRE: I don't even know what's happening. JESSICA:It's asking a lot, and you don't know me, but... [sighs] [Claire sighs] CLAIRE: Sure I do. I've seen you with your pants down. [cell phone beeps] JESSICA:Hey, can you pick me up? Thanks, Trish. I'll be waiting outside. Cut to TRISH'S CAR JESSICA: I go up there, I might not come back. So I want you to tell me what you came over the other day to tell me. TRISH: [sighs] What is this, last words? JESSICA:I want to know. TRISH:The IGH private research group that funded Simpson's drug trials? I might've found something that connects it to you and how you got your powers. JESSICA:I gave up looking for answers a long time ago. TRISH:I didn't. Look, it might be something, it might lead to nothing. JESSICA: There have been a lot of dead ends. TRISH: I know. JESSICA:But you just kept pushing past them. It's like you have this iron will. Hold on to it for me, will you? [Trish opens her door] JESSICA:Trish, don't! TRISH: I'm finishing this with you. JESSICA:[sighs] I was gonna say, wait until I call for backup. Teamwork, right? I read about that somewhere. TRISH: Okay, I'll wait here. Just... text me. JESSICA:You won't know if I'm a minion of evil. TRISH: Well, we need a signal. Something you would never say, like... "sardines" or "pickle juice." You say it, you're still you. JESSICA:Something I never say. Like, "I love you." [Jessica leaves.] TRISH: That'll do. [Sighs] Cut to BUILDING [whirring and grinding noises are heard as Jessica walks the corridor, approaching the penthouse that serves as Kilgrave's hideout] JESSICA: Hey! Hey, where's Kilgrave? As the lackey moves away, Jessica sees he's putting a severed arm into a blender. JESSICA: Jesus Christ! Stop! LACKEY: I... I have to remove Dad from the face of the Earth. JESSICA: No, you don't. Stop, it's okay. LACKEY:But then we have to k** ourselves! Jessica slaps him, rendering the guy unconscious, and then drags him into the storage room. Back in the living room, Jessica sees the picture of the guy - presumably - in front of a boat. Albert then gasps, startling Jessica. JESSICA: Oh, God. ALBERT: He's stronger. Don't listen. Don't look at him. He'll make you k**. JESSICA:Where did he go? Albert. Cut to STREET Trish waits outside her car, and then her cell phone chimes. Jessica sent a text: PENTHOUSE. I LOVE YOU. She rushes inside and drives away. Cut to JESSICA'S APARTMENT CLAIRE: [sighs] I can't come in, Shirley. I have a personal emergency.I know we're short, but...[sighs] Okay. I'll come when I can. Claire sighs, Malcolm comes in through the door MALCOLM: Who are you? CLAIRE: Who are you? MALCOLM: Neighbor. CLAIRE: Nurse. MALCOLM: Oh, sh**. Is Jessica hurt? CLAIRE: She's all right, far as I know. MALCOLM: Where is she? [Claire sighs] MALCOLM: Jess? Oh, God damn. CLAIRE: You know him? MALCOLM: Yeah, Luke. What happened to him? CLAIRE: I don't know. Not sure I want to. MALCOLM: So, are... you some kind of special nurse? CLAIRE: "Special"? As in... Nope, I'm not special. I just keep running into special. MALCOLM: Ah, you and me both.Is it a good thing? [sighs] CLAIRE: Can't change what we know. [chuckles] MALCOLM: Yeah, I miss ignorance, too. Claire chuckles before going to check on Luke MALCOLM: Wasn't that long ago I was... trying to get my degree in social work. CLAIRE: Wanted to help people? MALCOLM: I still do. CLAIRE: Well... don't need powers to be of use. MALCOLM: I don't want powers. I mean, I do not want to be on the receiving end of them either, but... I don't know, I just... I like people too much. Luke, Jessica, just by necessity, by definition, they're separate. Even from each other. CLAIRE: Maybe that's what they need most from us. Connection. MALCOLM: What does that make us? Sidekicks? CLAIRE: Oh, I'm no one's sidekick. MALCOLM: I can see that. Jessica's got it in her, you know? And she may well never find it, but it is in there. CLAIRE: An alcoholic? MALCOLM: A hero. CLAIRE: Tough business. MALCOLM: So is yours. Why don't you take a break for a while? I'll watch him. [sighs] CLAIRE: Thanks. You're not a... mind-controller, right? MALCOLM: Kilgrave. Evil prick. CLAIRE: [softly] Okay. I'll be on the couch. Malcolm then takes the chair besides Luke. MALCOLM: Man, if you got taken down, we are all in the sh**. Cut to HOGARTH'S OFFICE A still bruised Hogarth is on her laptop when the phone rings. HOGARTH: Christ. Jeri Hogarth. Cue Jessica on the phone, reading a vial on the penthouse. JESSICA: "Biological material, fetal tissue, Hope Shlottman. Submitted to testing by J. Hogarth." HOGARTH: Kilgrave made me tell him where it was. It's useless anyway. JESSICA:No, it made him stronger. HOGARTH: I don't know what else I can do to pay for my mistakes. I have bled for them, I have lost everything that I care about. Pam is facing murder charges, and she won't see me, and my partners are forcing me out. JESSICA:Don't let them. HOGARTH: Excuse me? JESSICA:Fight them. HOGARTH: Why? JESSICA:Because you are who you are. A sack of dark oozing sh** in an expensive suit. HOGARTH:Jessica... JESSICA:Which makes you the best shark in town, and you're gonna represent Justin Boden pro bono. HOGARTH:Who? JESSICA:Another one of Kilgrave's victims. He's gonna be charged with murder. Keep him safe. HOGARTH:Why? Where are you going? JESSICA:I'll text you the info. HOGARTH:And this does not make us square. JESSICA: [sighs] But doing something... good... it helps with the self-loathing. Trust me. [dial tone] [sighs] TRISH: You know, he left this here for you to find. [sighs] JESSICA: Subtle, right? It's docked at the Hudson Ferry Terminal. I found the bills. TRISH: And he wants you to go there. JESSICA:He must be feeling confident. At least now it'll end. One way or another. Cut to TERMINAL Then "Demons" by Sleigh Bells is heard whenever they cut to a hooded figure that enters the terminal. KILGRAVE: And here we are for the last and final round. [music continues] [music inaudible] KILGRAVE: Too afraid to look me in the eye? Present arms. [music continues] KILGRAVE: Just in case Dad's potion doesn't work. [music continues] [music inaudible] KILGRAVE: Jessica. [music continues] KILGRAVE: I demand that you show me your face... [alarm blaring] [music inaudible] [the hood comes down, it's Trish.] KILGRAVE: Oh, for God's sake, it's Patsy! Jessica comes from the shadows in the upper deck. KILGRAVE: Shoot her! The cops send a barrage of bullets. KILGRAVE: Goodbye, Jessica. [gunshots continue. Some of the cops are officer: I'm right behind you. [guns clicking] officer: Go, go! [grunts] Jessica does an impressive jump across the terminal, above all the cops. [gunshots continue] [gasps] She reaches the dock outside. Trish is still there, listening to music. KILGRAVE: Unbelievable. Ready the yacht. [motor revving] Kilgrave: Start k**ing each other. Now! [all grunting] KILGRAVE: [inhales] Stop! [man panting] [woman sobbing] KILGRAVE: Don't insult my intelligence. You're faking, aren't you? JESSICA:Faking what? KILGRAVE:Obviously, you have a plan. Otherwise, you'd have jumped over them all and I'd be dead, so... do share. JESSICA:I wanted you to make them stop. KILGRAVE:Bollocks, k**ing me would accomplish that, wouldn't it? JESSICA:You've never died before. KILGRAVE:Always a sodding hero, aren't you? JESSICA:No. KILGRAVE:[chuckles] Clever girl. Clever, clever girl. Pretending to give me what I want. [chuckles] I'd hoped for it. [sighs heavily] God, it is so tempting... to buy into this act. I've been asking the impossible of you. I see that now. I wanted you to love me. But you've never loved anyone. You're not even capable of it. With one exception. Come here, Patsy. You'd do anything to protect her, wouldn't you? JESSICA:Yes. KILGRAVE: Yeah, perhaps I chose the wrong sister. Hmm? From your perspective, I'll be raping her every day. My skin will be touching hers. She'll be my plaything. She'll be my slave. [sighs] And in her mind, she'll be dying, isn't that right? JESSICA:Yes. Kilgrave: We're leaving. If Patsy or I ever hear from you, or see you, see anyone who looks like you, she will slit her own throat. It's the ultimate contingency. Kiss me. Mean it. [she gives him a hearty kiss] KILGRAVE: Oh, God, it's true, isn't it? You would let me take your beloved sister. My God. It's finally over. You're mine now. No more fighting. [stammers] No more of these ugly displays. You'll be with me now. Look, after a while... however long it takes... I know... I know you will feel what I feel. Let's start with a smile. [Jessica smiles. Kilgrave chuckles] Tell me you love me. JESSICA: [looking at Trish] I love you. [Jessica grabs Kilgrave by the throat] JESSICA: Smile. [Jessica breaks Kilgrave's neck] [Trish gasps. Everyone else awakens from their trance, confused.] Cut to: JESSICA's APARTMENT [Luke starts blinking, then gets up with a groan] CLAIRE: Go slow. I'm a friend of Jessica's. LUKE: How did I get here? CLAIRE: Jessica. Well, I helped. [Luke sighs] LUKE: Where is she? CLAIRE: She's been arrested. She k**ed someone. It's all over the news. LUKE: [sighs] She... He got to her. CLAIRE:No, no, no. She got to him. Kilgrave is dead. LUKE: [scoffs] [exhales deeply] She did it. CLAIRE: Yeah, she did it. LUKE: They can lock her up for that. I won't let that happen. CLAIRE:Okay. Okay, enough. She saves you, you save her, then she has to save you again. And neither one of you want to be saved, right? LUKE: [groans] The police... they're looking for me. CLAIRE:But you're the least of their worries. After we got you out of the hospital, the place went nuts. Then down on the docks, some people went batsh** crazy, including the cops. Trust me, no one's looking for you. Nobody knows about you. Except me. LUKE: What do you know? CLAIRE:I know how to keep a secret. [Luke sighs] You know, Jessica... she's a good friend to have. She's all tough and sh**, but where you're concerned... LUKE: She's still tough and sh**. CLAIRE:Yeah. You're two of a kind. LUKE: I could use some water. CLAIRE: You know, that should make you happy. Somebody caring about you like that. Particularly if you feel the same way. Not that it's any of my business, but... I don't know... this might be something you want to work through. See what's possible. [When she arrives, Luke is gone. Claire just sips the water and sighs] Cut to INTERROGATION ROOM Jessica is sitting beside Hogarth, still bruised from the attack by ex-wife Wendy, as the lawyer talks with the cops. HOGARTH: Jessica Jones didn't ask for this. She didn't go looking for it. This monster found her. woman: She k**ed a man with her bare hands, Jeri. And it's not the first d**h she's been linked to. Now we have witnesses. HOGARTH: All of whom will testify that he forced them to try to k** each other. WOMAN: They were a bunch of drunken brawlers off a booze cruise. HOGARTH: Come on, Samantha. You must have tested their blood alcohol levels. Try this one. They were exposed to a toxic gas leak. Or there's something in the water, or subliminal advertising. I had dozens of justifications, I just didn't want to believe it. Even as more people were hurt... or k**ed. SAMANTHA: Are you testifying, Jeri? HOGARTH: No, no need. I will have more than enough testimony to convince a jury that this man forced Jessica to snap his own neck. SAMANTHA: That's your defense? He committed suicide? HOGARTH: Guilt. The guilt was un... unbearable. He couldn't live with all the pain... that he had caused. Either way, Jessica did not have a choice. She was compelled against her will. And this same man compelled an innocent young woman... to k** her own parents. If I had these same witnesses, Hope Shlottman would be alive today. SAMANTHA:Witness testimony won't prove the existence of mind control. HOGARTH: Tell that to the police officers who opened fire on my client. I can't wait to get them on the stand. SAMANTHA: Anything to add, Ms. Jones? Cut to: OUTSIDE THE PRISON Jessica: They say everyone's born a hero. But if you let it, life will push you over the line until you're the villain. Jessica walks up to Trish on her car, and the sisters embrace. Then they enter the car. Cut to TRISH'S APARTMENT A courier enters the apartment, as Trish is cleaning up the place. She signs the receipt. TRISH: Thank you. Trish sees a note "Here are the files as you requested. There are more where they came from. Love, mom" Jessica: Problem is, you don't always know that you've crossed that line. Cut to JESSICA'S APARTMENT [sighs] [sighs] [cell phone chimes] [sighs] automated voice: You have 12 new messages. man 1: Hey, are you the chick who saved all the people on the docks? I'm being strong-armed for rent money, and I thought... automated voice: Deleted. woman 1: Hi, uh, Ms. Jones. [stammering] My boyfriend has gotten... abusive, and I don't know who to turn to. I don't have any... automated voice: Deleted. man 2: Jessica Jones? I need your help. My brother owes some people money, but... woman 2 sobbing: Help me! man 3: My son ran away... woman 3 sobbing: Jessica, you have to save me! Jessica: Maybe it's enough that the world thinks I'm a hero. Maybe if I work long and hard, maybe I can fool myself. The camera begins a travelling, backing out of the apartment as the phone continues ringing. Then Malcolm answers it. Malcolm: Alias Investigations. How can we help? The camera continues to distance itself, all the way into the corridor. CLOSING CREDITS
