Every now and then you glance over an article concerning the roots of hip-hop, how everything descends (and perhaps is degenerated) from soul, funk, jazz, and the list goes on. And in essence, we all realize this is true. But one thing has always disappointed me in these types of articles. It's all about how the instrumentation samples funky breakbeats, jazzy percussion, soulful vibes and horns from all of these genres, but why is arguably the most important part of hip-hop music forgotten, the lyrics? And honestly, I can't stand this any much longer, which is why I'm devoting this to the progression of lyrics in between genres over the last decades. So, to showcase this a handful of well-known artists will be used to present multiple literary devices that people have been constructing beautiful songs with before the age of hip-hop.
