Book 1: The Snows of Summer Prologue The adventure begins in Heldren, a small village in Taldor, just north of the Border Wood near Qadira. Rumors of unseasonable pockets of wintry weather appearing across Taldor have begun to circulate among the town's gossip mongers. Farmer Dansby claims that someone keeps stealing from his fields. His farm lies closest to the Border Wood. Half of his crops have died from the unexpected cold snap, and the other half have been mostly carried off. His son fell ill after falling through the ice over Wishbone Creek. The boy said he spotted a white stag in the forest. He tried to follow it, and he swears that he heard it talking. Similarly, Dryden Kepp, a local hunter, claimed that he saw a giant white weasel on the High Ridge in the forest. No one believed him, so he went back to trap it and prove them wrong. In addition to these local occurrences, the local gossip is alive with news of a scandal involving the ruling families of the two nearest cites. Two weeks ago, Lady Argentea Mala**ene, the youngest daughter of Lord Eristal Mala**ene, Patron of Oppara, traveled past Heldren on her way from Oppara to Zimar, to meet her betrothed, Lord Jamison Reed, the thrice-married second son of Lord Fannon Reed, Baron of Zimar. Rumor has it that the two didn't get along. Lady Argentea caused a scandal by calling off the engagement, and she will soon be returning home. Part 1: An Early Frost Chapter One -- The Wounded Warrior While patrolling the edges of the Border Woods in the late afternoon, Rivvil Dragazhar comes across a gravely wounded and unconscious warrior, who seemed to be headed toward Heldren, perhaps to find help. Dragazhar partially cures the dying man's wounds, and brings him to the local temple, where his good friend, Alum Quinfree, is training to become a cleric. Alum uses his healing gifts, and saves the man's life. Unfortunately he is unable to save the man's heavily frostbitten and partially detached leg. When the warrior, Yuln Oerstag, regains consciousness, he explains that he was part of the guard escorting Lady Argentea Mala**ene from Zimar to Oppara. As the caravan skirted the Border Wood, the noblewoman's carriage came under attack by bandits and strange, wintry creatures. Lady Argentea was carried off, and Yuln was the only one to escape. A native of the far north, Yuln recognized some of the icy creatures that emerged from the forest. "These winter-touched are Fey creatures who have sworn themselves to the White Witches of Irrisen, tiny sprites no taller than the length of a man's forearm. But don't be fooled by their small stature. Legends say they have taken a sliver of ice into their hearts, and their touch bears the harsh bite of winter. Fight them with cold-iron and burning flame. Both burn them, and both are weapons they fear." "I don't know why they would want the Lady, but if one of the White Witches took her, no good shall come of it. The winter-touched do nothing without the leave of those who placed the ice in their hearts. If they're here, it's because a White Witch sent them. And much worse will follow." Alum and Dragazhar decide to leave immediately to see if they can find any information about the Lady's abductors. Yuln is appreciative and loans his cold-iron forged long sword to Dragazhar. Alum awakens the high priest, and informs him of their intent to investigate the Lady's abduction. Elder Safander gives them his blessing, and promises to recruit some strong warriors to join them when they return from their investigation.
