SOLEDAD'S APARTMENT Claire and Soledad are watching Thembi's newscast. THEMBI: As the situation continues to unfold here on Malcolm X Boulevard... SOLEDAD: I know you want to be out there. Stryker pushes Luke out the window. He lands hard on the ground below. The crowd groans in sympathy and encourages him to get up. The bootlegger's cameraman arrives. BOOTLEGGER: Keep rolling. Stryker punches Luke hard enough to send him flying several yards back. The crowd keeps encouraging Luke. STRYKER: Where you going, Carl? I'mma whoop your a** up and down the block. MAN IN THE CROWD: Come on, Luke! Luke gets some punches in on Stryker, smashing him into car windows. He struggles to stand but still lands another hard punch on Luke. STRYKER: James never loved Etta. He was gonna leave your mother for mine. MAN IN THE CROWD: Wait, wait, wait. Yo, the dude's talking about your moms, Luke? You reppin' Harlem, you better put it on him, son. STRYKER: I'll take being a ba*tard over being a mistake any day of the week. Now the whole world gets to watch you fall. ESU arrives. BOOTLEGGER: Roll, roll, roll. Stryker takes a moment to gather himself. The suit makes a whirring sound as it powers up. Claire arrives and pushes to the front of the crowd. OFFICERS: Ma'am, please step back. MISTY: Claire. Look, you gotta stay back. I gotta contain you and everybody else, too. CLAIRE: You don't believe he can win? MISTY: Of course Luke can win. LUKE: I'm done, Willis. I'm not doing this anymore. STRYKER: You ain't done. Not till one of us is dead. LUKE: You're more like Dad than you think. A bell rings. Luke is boxing a white boy while Stryker coaches him from the sidelines. The present and flashback are intercut. YOUNG STRYKER: Throw in the jab! Move! Keep moving, keep moving! MARIO: No. In the past and present fights, Luke is crowded against the ropes, trying to guard his body as his opponent lands punch after punch. YOUNG STRYKER: You can take it. Aisha starts chanting Luke's name and the crowd takes it up. In the flashback and in the present, Luke stands and advances on his opponent. LUKE: You're right. You reap what you sow. Luke lands a hard punch in both fights. YOUNG STRYKER: Let's go! Put it on him! Put it on him! LUKE: Am I my brother's keeper? No, I'm not. In the flashback the bell rings and Luke is the victor. In the present the crowd goes wild. Mario steps forward and trains his gun on Luke. MARIO: On the ground, now! We got Judas bullets, Cage. MISTY: Lieutenant, stand down. I got you. Councilwoman Dillard... MARIAH: What? MISTY: You are under arrest for the murder of Cornell Stokes. MARIAH: You goin' down. MISTY: Do the perp walk. MARIAH: You are going down. MISTY: Take her out of here. A little later, Misty walks over to Stryker as the last of his armor is bagged up and he's being readied for the ambulance. MISTY: Mmm, mmm, mmm. Oh, come on. You're not even gonna try to move? Not even a lil' bit? Take his tired broken false-preachin' a** on out of here. Luke walks up to Claire, who offers him a handkerchief for the blood in his mouth. LUKE: I should be healed up in a couple of hours, right? CLAIRE: Sooner than that, Power Man. Claire and Luke look at each other like they're about to kiss. The cameraman hoists his camera up to capture it. BOOTLEGGER: Nah, B! Brother deserves discretion. Luke and Claire notice and the moment pa**es. CLAIRE: How did you know that you could do that? LUKE: The more I hit him the more he dished out. So I stopped feeding him hate. CLAIRE: What if it didn't work? LUKE: Well, sometimes you gotta throw out the science and go for what you know. AISHA (on the news): All these people were talking bad about Luke Cage. But they didn't stop for one minute to look at the good he had done. Cleaning up Crispus Attucks by himself, lookin' out for people? Most of these guys wear spandex. Who would have thought a black man in a hoodie would be a hero? OUTSIDE THE STATIONHOUSE Misty, Claire, and Luke are walking towards the door of the precinct. Reporters clustered by the entrance notice them and start running towards them. REPORTERS: There he is. There's Luke. MISTY: Hey, back it off. Back! REPORTER: Mr. Cage, how does it feel to be a hero? LUKE: I'm no hero. I'm a regular guy, just trying to live life on his own terms, one day at a time. REPORTERS: Are you single? Do you have anything to say to Councilwoman Dillard? Have you received any medical treatment? How does it feel to be vindicated? Inside the stationhouse, Mariah just got her mugshot taken. MISTY: You can take a seat. RIDLEY: Mr. Cage. My name is Inspector Priscilla Ridley. You realize there is a warrant still out for your arrest. LUKE: I do. I came here to clear things up. I haven't done any of the things that I've been charged with. You gonna let her just skee-wee on out of here again? RIDLEY: Actually, it's "ooh-woop" and no, she's not going anywhere, but we are showing her every courtesy the NYPD extends very slowly. AN INTERROGATION ROOM Mariah is alone in the room, clearly having trouble holding it together. Several shots of the same room of Mariah screaming, replacing her earrings, tapping her fingers, indicate that a long time is pa**ing. MARIAH: I want my goddamn phone call! MARIAH: Okay, Mama. All right. Hmm. This ends here. Back in the main area of the stationhouse, Luke and Claire are sitting next to each other. MISTY (to Claire): I already said you don't need to be here. CLAIRE: I'm fine where I am. LUKE: If Claire leaves, I leave. MISTY: So be it. I'm not being redundant. I'm just being thorough. CLAIRE: Luke is innocent. LUKE: Claire, I got this. I'm good. CLAIRE: I know you do. It's just frustrating. MISTY: Officer Albini in the park? LUKE: I wasn't even in the state. Claire and I went to Georgia. MISTY: What were you doing in Georgia? Unfinished business. MISTY: You said no more secrets. Luke reluctantly lifts his shirt to show where his bullet wounds were. MISTY: You don't have any scars. LUKE: The doctor who did this to me...with Claire's help, did it again, and I got better. CLAIRE: The officer in the park? Damon Boone? Just match the fist prints from the suit and gloves that Stryker was wearing. All of that was Stryker. MISTY: Why didn't you just come to me? LUKE: I didn't know you. I stayed out of it. MISTY: Until you were right in the center of it. LUKE: They k**ed Pop. MISTY: They did. LUKE: I couldn't just lay in the cut anymore. Pop knew about my abilities. So I put them to good use. I shut down Crispus Attucks personally. This speech is cut with Luke heroically walking places. Through Crispus Attucks, through Harlem on the day of Pop's funeral, outside Genghis Connie's. MISTY: That wasn't your job. LUKE: People needed someone that didn't require a warrant or shield to get things done. Call it a vigilante, or a superhero...Call it what you will, but like it or not, I finally accepted that that someone had to be me. MISTY: Maybe I could've helped you. The police all stop what they're doing to listen. In this part of the speech we see a montage of Harlem murals and paintings, and children. LUKE: This burden is bigger than you. Or me. People are scared but they can't be paralyzed by that fear. You have to fight for what's right every single day, bulletproof skin or not. You can't just not snitch, or turn away or take money under the table because life has turned you sour. When did people stop caring? Harlem is supposed to represent our hopes and dreams. It's the pinnacle of black art, politics, innovation. It's supposed to be a shining light to the world. It's our responsibility to push forward, so that the next generation will be further along than us. Pop said his mantra aloud twice a day. The kids in the shop were pissed but they could never unhear it. "Never backwards... POP: Always forward.... LUKE: "Forward..." MISTY: "Always." You forget I grew up around the man. CLAIRE: I wish I could've met him. MISTY: In a way, you have. Misty turns around and sees all the other cops staring. MISTY: Well, hello! Doesn't everybody have work to do? CLAIRE: Is Mariah still in there? MISTY: Yeah. LUKE: Well, now that I'm no longer a suspect you guys got any take-out menus? I'm starving. THE INTERROGATION ROOM MARIAH (tearfully): You know, I kept telling Cornell it was enough. He had enough money to keep Harlem's Paradise flush. Even for opening another club downtown like our grandmother always talked about. He had the talent to make it big. But there was always another deal, another detail. And then this this guy, Diamond Jim. RIDLEY: Diamondback. MARIAH: Yes, Diamondback. Cornell said that he was his direct contact, whatever that means. And he was pissed off when those guns were stolen. You know, in that that thing that your Detective Scarfe got caught up in? RIDLEY: There were a lot of dirty hands. MARIAH: Not Cornell's. He didn't have the guns. RIDLEY: Oh, yes, he did. That's why Detective Scarfe got shot. Detective Scarfe stole them from evidence and then gave them back to Cornell. MARIAH: I don't know any details. I just know that Cornell was scared and he wanted out. And the night when I came into the club, that big brother that was fighting Luke Cage up on Malcolm X..."Hey," I screamed, and he...he pulled a gun on me and said that if I didn't say it was Luke Cage, he was gonna k** me. RIDLEY: He said Luke Cage? That it had to be Luke Cage? MARIAH: Yes. He was firm about that. Luke Cage. Yes! RIDLEY: And Candace Miller? MARIAH: Oh, God. Candace. She tried to protect me, but she didn't have to. I feel terrible that a decent man's name has been maligned, but I will do whatever I need to to rectify that. I will. Misty comes in holding a bunch of photos. MISTY: You are absolutely goddamn right you will. Start by telling the truth. MARIAH: I am not a liar, Detective. MISTY: Mmm. According to the lab Cottonmouth was struck in the back of the head by a heavy, circular object probably consistent with a bottle, before he was pushed. RIDLEY: How do we know he was pushed, Detective? MISTY: The angle. The background shifts to Harlem's Paradise, Misty's fantasy recreation of the night of Cottonmouth's murder. MARIAH (fantasy): No! No! No! I did not want it! No! Misty watches the murder. MISTY: Cottonmouth landed on his back, turned over, and then crawled. MARIAH (fantasy): You shut up! No! No, I didn't want it! MISTY: Judging by the wounds on his hands, he probably was pleading for his life when he was smashed by a heavy, circular base. The fantasy fades and the interrogation room returns. MISTY: Now, the coroner thought it was maybe a heavy waste basket. But my vote it was a mic stand. I went through Harlem's Paradise inventory records with the stage manager, and it turns out there was a mic stand that was unaccounted for. MARIAH: I've been around the music business my whole life. Equipment goes missing. You can't trust n***as around equipment. MISTY: Cottonmouth was weakened. It wouldn't take a man to k** him in that state, just somebody who was angry and pa**ionate about seeing him dead. And someone who was sloppy in the cover-up. Misty plays a portion of her recording of Candace's confession. CANDACE (recording): Mariah k**ed him. MISTY (recording): What? How do you know this? CANDACE (recording): I heard them talking about it. The guy who always wears sungla**es he was there, trying to calm Mariah down... MISTY: And that's just a taste. An African-American woman, mid-twenties, in front of a bodega. Cut to Candace standing in front of a bodega. She sends a text: "I'm here" The victim had a pay-as-you-go phone in her pocket. I traced the phone's credit card. It belongs to you. Chang thought you might've gotten cloned, but you bought the phone and you activated it. And the victim had numerous text exchanges with an NYPD cell phone number. It's yours. CANDACE: Come on. Where are you, Misty? SHADES: I'm right here. Shades shoots Candace in the head point blank. MISTY: How recent were the texts? I lost my phone at the barber shop. Show me the picture, Bailey. BAILEY: We should verify with the family first. MISTY: Show me the goddamn picture, Bailey. Please. Bailey shows her a picture on his phone. She's instantly envisions the crime scene. BAILEY: The victim appears to be Candace Miller. Misty storms back into Mariah's interrogation room MARIAH: Was that an important call, my dear? Misty makes to attach Mariah but Bailey holds her back. MISTY: You murdered her! RIDLEY: Hey, hey, hey! MISTY: You murdered her! MARIAH: You are out of control. BAILEY: Misty, stop! MISTY: Get off of me! MARIAH: You're hysterical. She's being... MISTY: You murdered her! MARIAH: She's being hysterical. MISTY: You murdered Candace and you murdered Cornell. MISTY: Enough is enough! MARIAH: What? What are you talking about? RIDLEY: What is going on? MISTY: Candace is dead. MARIAH: What? MISTY: You stole my phone. I know it was you! MARIAH: You will say anything about me, won't you? Where's your proof? I loved my cousin. And I would test that love against the recorded voice of a dead who*e any day. Am I still being charged with anything? RIDLEY: No. Not at this time. I hear that Cuban coffee is particularly robust. CLAIRE: That might be the corniest thing you've said yet. It also happens to be true. She s**ily eats some lo mein. Luke steps into the hall to put something in the trash and he sees Mariah getting ready to leave. An officer is helping her into her coat. Luke walks over to her. MARIAH: Oh, thank you. Helping a sister out. The hero of Harlem. Congratulations! You are good for the neighborhood. LUKE: You're not. What about our deal? Where's the file? MARIAH: What file? Buh-bye! Mariah leaves. Misty and Claire wander in. LUKE: What the hell happened? MISTY: They k**ed Candace. CLAIRE: What? My mom... MISTY: Not your mom. She's fine. We checked on her. Shades or somebody used my phone to lure Candace out of the apartment. But I can't prove it yet. LUKE: What about her confession? MISTY: It's worthless. LUKE: Why? MISTY: If she were still alive, that would be one thing. But she admitted to taking money from Mariah, she changed her statement, and now she's dead. The definition of reasonable doubt. And the woman she's accusing is politically connected. It's unwinnable. There's no way the DA will take that case. That's why Ridley just kicked her. LUKE: Mariah and Shades will talk. Trust me. CLAIRE: I told her not to leave. LUKE: I know. A few people walk into the room. G-MAN: Carl Lucas, I'm Marshal Franco. This is Marshal Johnson. You're under arrest for your unlawful escape from Seagate Prison. The marshalls ready a set of handcuffs. MISTY: What are you doing? LUKE: You won't need those. JOHNSON: Says who? LUKE: Says me. I'm done running. RIDLEY: I'm sorry, Mr. Cage. I'm gonna recommend the New York City DA's office drop all charges against you. I have done all I can. Thank you for all you've done for us. MISTY: Luke is innocent. LUKE: They're not arresting Luke Cage. They're arresting Carl Lucas. CLAIRE: Who called you? FRANCO: Once a city councilwoman identified Luke Cage as Carl Lucas on television, our office received numerous calls. The information's pertinent and valid. MISTY: Mariah, again. LUKE: I'm innocent, and I can prove it. FRANCO: It doesn't matter what you can prove. You still owe the state of Georgia time. LUKE: Okay. He turns to Claire. LUKE: Sorry. Coffee's gonna have to wait, babe. Luke follows the marshals out. Claire waits a moment, then runs after him. CLAIRE: Luke? She kisses him. CLAIRE: Like I said, I know a really great lawyer in town. I'll call him. LUKE: Okay. Be careful. CLAIRE: Always. LUKE: You're so corny. He kisses her again and walks away. On his way out he sees Mariah giving a TV interview. A little later, Mariah gets into the back of a car next to Shades. MARIAH: Alex, you're the man. ALEX: Anything you need, Madam Councilwoman, let me know. Shades hands Mariah the pearl handled gun. SHADES: It's old school. But it's got a nice feel. MARIAH: Belonged to Cornell. SHADES: It suits you. MARIAH: Yeah, it does. Let's head up. IN THE FEDS' CAR JOHNSON: It's a long trip. He directs his comment to Johnson, the black agent. LUKE: Oh, I like Chester Himes. This is a good one. FRANCO: It's actually mine. LUKE: What were you reading before? JOHNSON: Some West Coast sh**.
