"I frequently wish that the government would ease up a little bit in providing me with topics for songs. Do you ever get that feeling yourself? You've just about got your desk cleared off and you look up and here comes somebody with two armloads of work for you. Well I get that feeling watching these guys give their press conferences. I'm sitting there saying "Aw, no. 18 more songs to write". For example, it was about this time last year when the United States Post Office announced their plans to deliver the mail after the nuclear holocaust. And I said, "Aw, no. Another song to write." As it happens, I have a brother in law who's actually quite highly placed in the postal department there in Washington, and we had Thanksgiving dinner down at their house in Virginia, and at one point I called him aside, I said, "Bill. I'm gonna have to write a song about that." And he's known me a long time and he'd kinda halfway been expecting that, and uh, all he asked was that I try to be kind. And so I tried. And I failed."
Yes sir, modern life is scary
It's sure tough on me and thee
It's hard to count on anything this days
When when things get too hairy with their insecurities
We can count on the Post Office, Lord we pray
They say we'll all be cinders in the end
But there's one bright hope on which we may depend (may depend)
They can go and drop the big one
But the mail will go through
That's a promise to you
That the mail will go through
There'll be no-one left to read it but the mail will go through
What a wonderful change that will be
The announcement was so welcome
It allayed our deepest fears
It was met with heartfelt cheers
As we sank a couple beers
We can write too all our loved ones saying "We're no longer here"
And the mail will go through
Help me sing it
They can go and drop the big one
But the mail will go through
That's a promise to you
That the mail will go through
There'll be no-one left to read it but the mail will go through
What a wonderful change that will be
When the final war is over
And it's been a great success
We've been powdered more or less
Comes the mailman express
He'll come sifting through the ashes 'til he finds the right address
And the mail will go through
They can go and drop the big one
But the mail will go through
That's a promise to you
That the mail will go through
There'll be no-one left to read it but the mail will go through
What a wonderful change that will be
So the future can't be all bad
There's a lot you gotta like
If they vaporized your bike
You can take a little hike
And get your letter in the chute between the first and second strike
And the mail will go through
They can go and drop the big one
But the mail will go through
That's a promise to you
That the mail will go through
There'll be no-one left to read it but the mail will go through
What a wonderful change that will be
What a wonderful change that will be
