Last night I dreamed that
I was a boxer
Walking home through the city
After winning a fight
The drunks called me Champ and
The who*es called me Baby
But my love called me home through
The cold, rainy night
My friends called me reckless
I thought I knew better
I said I've got one more
Fight in me, I'm sure
But I ain't no young man
And the next time I fall down
It'll only be pride that I stand back up for
My manager, Johnny, said we had a good run
I'm luck I still have my health and my mind
And with the purse from this last fight,
I can pay off my mortgage
And try to forget that I ache all the time
I went home to my baby
The house stood in darkness
The bell was still ringing
Loud and clear in my head
I laid myself down and
Drifted off next to her
Where nothing existed
But me and her and this bed
When I woke I was naked
And pressed against my lover
Her hips bucking wildly against mine
But never once did she
Turn her eyes to look at me
I suppose that I could have been anyone
Just for that short time
