As we walked across the mountain our guide led us off the known path. We had brought no food with us and were unable to reach our destination that day ... That evening, arriving at a stream, we found such a great number of crabs (not at all resembling crayfish) that one could have caught a thousand in an instant. The monk ate them raw and a**ured us they were better raw than cooked. We ate them with him, and did not remember ever having tasted meat that was so delicious and savoury, whether it was because of our pressing hunger or because this food was so new to us.
