A huge man standing in the doorway
down into the earth - a very deep grave that they
came on, making excavations for the family tomb
a year or two ago behind the village church,
The skeleton was nine feet tall. He loomed
against the bed millennia; our own man:
such barbarians as in our wages lurch
to meet the centuries with whom there is no parley.
How they gibber and gyrate back there down there !
And men like him lie face-down surely,
in the rear-guard, fighting back the deeper murk.
Thank heavens there are giants for the work.
