Each day I'd go about my rounds pa**ing his house
Always rushing around or wasting away
To feel her again is my last wish
These are my days without her
Feeding the birds in the garden
The only thing that kept her at peace
Sitting alone, cars half parked in the gravel driveway
I'd sometimes catch myself staring in his direction
He left everything untouched in the house
Just the way she left it
Just the way he remembered before she pa**ed
There was warmth at one time
With green gra** and laughter
Every season had aged them well
Every minute spent together was never wasted
It's a shame to think how fast the beauty had gone away
And the happiness they had was no longer shared
My darling, your life was sweet
I'll keep you close to my heart
And we will meet again
She lay in the bed
Pale white, barely able
While the days dwindled down to her last
He held tight to her hand
And to her every word and command
He stayed strong, he stayed loyal
They had loved till the last of her breath
She had left
I watched him sit there by himself
The same face, the same place
He turned to stone
What little life remains
Is not a fraction of what it was
He kept living the same routine
I asked him what she said before her pa**
“I've lived a long life.”
