There are three essential questions that every human has asked themselves. Who are we? Where did we come from? What is the point? And if you haven't asked yourself this yet, then you are lying. Despite our differences, the human species all shares a common thought which is that nobody actually knows what the hell they are doing. I could not tell you why I am on this earth, breathing oxygen, drinking water, and utilizing the energy given by the sun. I could not tell you what the center of the universe is or the vastness of the space that surrounds us. The only thing that I know is that I am here.
Who are we? I am a person that contains layers of flesh, personality, and thought. Beyond that, I do not know. I was given life, and with that I will make sure that I utilize every second of every minute to pay back for what was given to me. Nowadays, it seems as if the world is resting right on our finger tips, accessing social media with a touch of a screen and hearing about terrorist attacks just minutes after the occurrence. We need to take advantage of our vast knowledge and build connections between empty spaces. We are a one of a kind species containing one of a kind people. We must recognize that our lives are dependent upon others; without others, it is impossible for us to grow, thrive, and live. Perhaps our lives were given to us for the sole purpose of building a pyramid of compa**ion. Nobody lives a perfect life independent from the help of others. Therefore, life is about recognizing our faults and doing better. As mentioned before, I contain multitudes, some of which hold flawed characteristics. And I, along with the other 6.8 billion others, have a choice. I can dwell on my flaws or I can embrace them. To dwell on oneself is to never accept the life you are given and by default never live at all. However, embracing your flaws holds a much stronger message and sense of purpose. To embrace who you are is to embrace life itself.
Where did we come from? Obviously, there are multiple routes you can take when answering this question; however, the answer is not as simple as to say that s**ual intercourse is to blame. I would like to answer this question from a philosophical perspective. To begin with, it is a scientific fact that energy is never created and never destroyed. In fact, in one of my favorite novels, Looking for Alaska, John Green states “we cannot be born, and we cannot die...like all energy, we can only change shapes and sizes and manifestations.” With that being said, Green speaks a strong truth that many people often forget. Everything on this earth thrives on energy, the same energy that has been lingering since the birth of the universe, including people such as me and you. To answer the question simply, we do not know where we come from, but we do have an idea of how we came to be. As far as I am concerned, the energy that I contain today could have been the same energy as a tree a century ago. Therefore, to say cliche acronyms such as YOLO, is to be unaware of the fact that you don't only live once. We should live our lives like we are invincible only because we are invincible. Our energy was not created and it was not destroyed and therefore it is immortal.
What is the point? This one is simple. Some people believe it takes a lifetime to solve this metaphorical puzzle, yet in my short eighteen years of life I believe I have discovered it. There simply is no point. You may call me cynical or pessimistic, yet there is no negative connotation with this answer. To perceive life as pointless is to realize that all of our actions are based on nothing but what we deem as correct. Those who search for the purpose of life will waste the precious time that is given to them trying to uncover the never ending mystery. In the end, they will only be left with the recognition that their life has flashed before their eyes without even blinking. So live a life of carefreeness and authenticity because the time a person realizes that there is no point to life, is the time a person begins to live.
